 **Description:**
From the municipal office, the path leads past the market church, up the street, after about 500 m turn left into the forest. It goes uphill to the sawmill, further towards Stadl to Mühlbach, where the path turns left to the "Forellenzirkus." Then it goes through Schöfberg and Edt to Stadl. From the church up to the forest, along the stations of the cross to the "Jagabild." The legend tells that Chief Hunter Greiner fell into the hands of poachers. They tied him head down over an anthill to a beech tree. In desperation, he prayed to the Virgin Mary. A white stag bit through the ropes and saved him from death. In gratitude, he erected a picture of the Virgin Mary. Later, a chapel was built. It takes about 20 minutes to the summit of the Haugstein, the highest elevation in the Alpine foothills (895 m). To the right of the chapel, a forest path leads to the district road, then right toward Zigeunerbrunn and then left down to the quarry. Through the forest it goes downhill to Engelhartszell.**Tip:**
Summit Haugstein - with 895 meters, the highest elevation in the Innviertel; legend of the Jagabild; In the Aktivzentrum Stadl is the P.-Johannes Schasching Hall, and in the church in Stadl a memorial plaque for Father Johannes Schasching, an important Jesuit, social ethicist, university professor, and author. He was a leading representative of Catholic social teaching.**Equipment:**

Cafe "Sissi"

On 21 April 1854, Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria started her journey to Vienna as the future bride of Emperor Franz Joseph I. A particularly festive reception was prepared for the young Sissi in the border customs office and market of Engelhartszell.

In memory of this event, a café named "Sissi" has now been set up in the former grocer's shop of the Atteneder family with great attention to detail.

Guests at the "Sissi" cafe can expect a variety of breakfasts, hot dishes at lunchtime, homemade pastries, wines from Hebenstreit, Engelszell monastery liqueurs and Trappist beers.

Filialkirche Stadl

Above the Danube valley lies the highest elevated place of worship of the Innviertel region. It was constructed between the years 1905 and 1906 by the local community. The hard work and of the people are unimaginable today. The massive granite blocks were extracted by hand and also the bricks were formed by hand. Since 1928 Stadl is a branch of Engelhartszell. Every year on 15th of August the crucifix procession from Stadl to the “Jagabild” takes place. The path is lined with 14 artistically designed crucifix stations, which display reverse glass paintings.

Kaiserliches Mauthaus in Engelhartszell

The Imperial toll house from the 15th century used to be a building at the border of the former Empire. A wall picture (sgraffito) gives an overview about the history of the toll house and its importance for the customs clearance of the ships, which lasted up to several days. At the Danube side old flooding marks can be seen, which are signs of the hard times that were eyperienced by the town’s residents. The building was completely renovated and is since 1999 the seat of the Northern service centre of the “Energie AG Oberösterreich”.

The old cellar inhibits the cultural cellar “Kulturkeller der Energie AG” where from April to October many exhibitions of local artists with exquisite music performances take place.

Pestsäule Engelhartszell

The plague column "Engelhartszeller Pestsäule" from 1510 reminds of the Black Death which raged several times through the market town. Documents report for the first time of it in 1348 when the Asian bubonic plague was introduced through Tyrol. During this year, because this misfortune wasn’t enough, Engelhartszell had to endure also an earthquake and a plague of locusts.
In 1484 the plague also raged severely through Engelhartszell and in 1570 it erased the whole population of the monastery “Stift Engelszell” within three weeks. In 1636 documents report for the last time of the Black Death in Engelhartszell. When in 1679 the plague erupted in Vienna, many of the residents flew to the safe market town by the Danube.

Pfarrkirche Engelhartszell "Mariä Himmelfahrt"

The beautiful parish church of Engelhartszell lies on a rock in the town centre and can be accessed from the market place with 62 steps. The church offers a worth seeing baroque interior.

A unique feature is hidden in the triumphal arch to the Altar: Behind the statue of the Saint John you can see a rectangular deepening – the mount for a rood screen! During the middle age the altar room was only accessible for clergy and thus, was separated by a richly ornamented wall – the rood screen or in German “Lettner” – from the worldly nave.
In this parish church a crucifix group used to be situated before the rood screen, which can be still seen on the outer wall above the main entrance. After the Council of Trent in the 16th century these barriers were removed from most churches and the high altars, which were visible for everyone, were installed.

To the history:
From 1459 to 1503: A marble panel in presbytery and a civil emblem at the southern entry document that in 1459 the chancel and in 1503 the nave was constructed. On 12th August in 1509 the gothic market church was consecrated by the Bishop Urban from Passau.

In 1764 the church was artistically redesigned in the baroque style by the Tyrolean sculptor Joseph Deutschmann. Also the gothic spire was replaced by an onion-shaped baroque steeple.

Old gravestones on the outer walls display the historical importance of the market town.
Constructed on a rock in the centre of town, the Parish church, visible from far way, dominates the image of Engelhartszell. From the market place 62 steps lead up to a round tour with a fantastic view over the town.
