From the Iron Curtain to the Green Belt Until the early 1990s, the Iron Curtain divided Europe into East and West, from the Barents Sea in northern Russia to the Black Sea. Today, the 10,400 kilometre-long route has been opened up with a long-distance cycle path. EuroVelo 13 leads through 20 countries, including 14 EU member states. Where fortifications and fences once stretched across the country, today the Green Belt delights with biotopes, nature reserves, fields and forests. Towns, villages, museums and monuments tell of the past and the lively present.
