From the market square, the route leads through the Gusental valley, slightly uphill and ideal for the first few easy kilometres, to Reichenau. This is where the only noteworthy ascent of the tour up to Ottenschlag begins. Less than 200 metres in altitude, spread over four kilometres, is no great challenge and the route continues past Wintersdorf in the direction of Alberndorf. The Affenzeller whiskey distillery awaits at KM 30 after a slight descent, where a look into the world of liquid gold gives you strength and the remaining seven kilometres, constantly downhill, towards Gallneukirchen fly by.
