One part can also be done as a loop along the wild and romantic trail, past the former Koppenalm and back to the Budergraben. Trail nr. 463 starts at an old delapidated mill (access by car to this point); up through a forest at first, then over a gravel field and in large serpentines past large trees to a valley basin with mountain pine and dolines. Then the trail continues along the shady side of the Merkensteins to a spring, leading steeper uphills, then through large mountain pine fields crossing to the left to a short but steep part leading to the peak. Most of the climg is situated to the south, so it is best to get an early start.
