This trail is part of the Danube-Moldova hiking trail from Vyssi Brod-Bad Leonfelden-Linz. Less than 20 km from the centre of Linz and yet the second highest market in Upper Austria - that's Hellmonsödt. During his imprisonment in the tower room of Wildberg Castle, the Bohemian King Wenceslas is said to have mused at night about how brightly the moon shone over the wasteland here - which is where the legend derives the place name from. The people of Linz have always appreciated the wooded area around the village as a walking area. However, it is a special experience to hike from up there southwards and usually also downwards to the provincial capital. First of all, walk from the market square in Hellmonsödt along the road to Althellmonsödt on hiking trail no. 160 in the direction of the Pelmberg open-air museum. Opposite the former Gasthaus zur Linde inn, we branch off to the right. The Breitlusserwald forest soon provides shade. After approx. 3.5 km we come to the Pelmberg open-air museum, a three-cornered farm whose history dates back to 1325. Right next to it is the Pelmbergstüberl with its excellent cuisine. The roast pork and home-made pastries in particular have a unique flavour. From the Pelmbergstüberl, a tarmac road on the right leads back to hiking trail no. 160, on which we continue to the left. We cross a ridge on which the villages of Stratreith, Oberwinkl and Oberbairing (inn) are located. The view extends to the distant mountain prominence of the Ötscher, the Grosser Priel, the Dachstein and the Traunstein as far as the Watzmann. We then descend somewhat steeper through a forest to St. Magdalena. In the evening, you are literally immersed in a sea of a hundred thousand points of light. Before the church, a steep path on the right leads us under a bridge of the former horse-drawn railway and down into the residential area of Linz-Urfahr.
