It is the smallest planet in our solar system and orbits the sun in an orbit that is very different from a circle. As it is also the innermost planet and is therefore always very close to the sun in the sky, we can only see it shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset. Like our Earth's moon, its surface is littered with numerous impact craters. As Mercury has no atmosphere, there are large temperature differences between its night and day sides (from -170°C to + 400°C). Like Earth and Venus, Mercury is a rocky planet. Due to its relatively large iron core, which makes up 70% of its mass, it has the highest density of all the planets after Earth. \\Mercury is one of the planets in the solar system that has been little explored with the help of space probes. There have only been 2 missions to date: Mariner10 (USA, 1974 and 1975) and Messenger (USA, 2004). As it is only imperceptibly smaller than the Earth, it is often referred to as the 'sister planet'. However, it is probably best known as the 'morning' or 'evening star' because it can be visible for several hours as a bright point of light above the horizon in the morning or evening sky. Like Mercury, Venus also shows phase shapes in the telescope (from a narrow crescent to 'full Venus'). Its atmosphere consists mainly of carbon dioxide and dense clouds of sulphuric acid, which lead to a pronounced greenhouse effect with temperatures above 400°C. Due to the constantly closed cloud cover, the surface cannot be observed directly. Venus has practically no magnetic field. \\nThe planet was the target of numerous exploration missions by both Soviet (Venera, Vega) and American space probes (Mariner, Pioneer Venus) as early as the beginning of the 1960s. The plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun is called the ecliptic. The inclination of the Earth's axis to the ecliptic (23.5 degrees) is the cause of the seasons. The rotation causes the alternation of day and night, the lengths of which depend on the seasons and latitude. The interplay between the Earth's rotation and the gravitational influence of the sun and moon on the Earth leads to the well-known tidal changes of the seas (ebb and flow). The Earth is the only planet on which water occurs in liquid form (?blue planet?). 71% of the earth's surface is covered by water masses (oceans). The Earth has a large iron-nickel core surrounded by a liquid mantle, which is responsible for the Earth's magnetic field. Temperatures of over 6000°C and a pressure of several million bar prevail in the centre of the earth. The outermost layer (lithosphere), which is less than 100 kilometres thick, forms large plates on which our habitat, the continents, 'float'. The large earth mass is sufficient to permanently hold an atmosphere. The lowest part in which we live (troposphere) consists of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% argon, carbon dioxide and water. Depending on the solar radiation (latitude and day/night cycle), we can measure temperatures on Earth ranging from around +50°C (at the equator) to ?80°C (at the poles). \\nThe Earth's moon \\nDistance to the Earth: 356,400 to 384,000 km Diameter: 3,476 km Orbital period around the Earth: 27.3 days Rotation time: 27.3 days \\nThe moon measures just under a quarter of the Earth in diameter and is also 81 times lighter than the Earth, which is why it has no atmosphere. The temperatures vary between \\n \\n+120°C on the side facing the sun and up to ?150°C on the side facing away from the sun. As its rotation time is the same as its orbital period around the Earth, it always turns the same side towards us. It also shows periodic phases (from new moon, waxing moon, full moon to waning moon), which are determined by its position in relation to the sun or earth. Even with the naked eye, dark areas (?seas?) and light-coloured structures (?highlands?) can be seen on its surface, which, when viewed through a telescope, turn out to be mountain ranges, craters, rilles and ring mountains. The most likely hypothesis today is that the moon was formed by the grazing collision of a celestial body about the size of Mars with the primordial Earth. According to this collision theory, a large part of the matter ejected from both bodies ended up in orbit around the Earth, where it formed the moon. \\nOn 21 July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first humans to set foot on our satellite (Apollo 11). \\nEclipses - cosmic spectacles \\nA lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun - Earth - Moon are in line and the full Moon is eclipsed (totally or partially) by the Earth's shadow. However, it does not appear completely dark to us, but reddish to copper-coloured due to the refraction of the sun's rays by the earth's atmosphere. \\nA solar eclipse occurs when the sun ? Moon ? Earth are in line and the new moon moves in front of the sun's disc for a short time and partially (partial or annular solar eclipse) or completely (total solar eclipse) darkens it. Although our outer neighbouring planet is only about half the size of Earth, it is similar to it in many ways: a Martian day is similar in length to an Earth day, there are seasons that last about half a year, it has polar ice caps and an atmosphere (albeit thin and consisting of 95% carbon dioxide). The temperatures on its surface are also roughly comparable to those on Earth: +5°C in the Martian summer at the equator and down to -90°C in the Martian winter night. Its surface appears reddish (?red planet?) in the telescope due to iron oxide compounds (?rust?). Mars has wide plains and high mountains, the highest of which (Olympus Mons) is a shield volcano with a height of 24 kilometres and a base diameter of 600 kilometres. \\nMars is orbited by the 2 tiny moons Phobos (fear) and Deimos (terror). \\nThe history of remote sensing of the planet by space probes goes back to the early 1960s (American Mariner and Viking probes, Soviet Mars probes). Towards the end of the twentieth century, the first successful orbits and later also the first landings on the red planet with probes took place, of which the following missions are particularly worth mentioning: Pathfinder/Rover, Global Surveyor, Odyssey, Express/Beagle 2, Spirit, Opportunity, Renaissance Orbiter, Phoenix. \\nSmall bodies in the solar system \\nPlanetoids (minor planets) \\nIn addition to the 8 large planets, thousands of smaller celestial bodies (also known as 'asteroids') orbit the sun, most of them between Mars and Jupiter. The four largest and brightest (Ceres, Vesta, Pallas, Juno) have diameters of several hundred kilometres and are even visible with binoculars. \\nMeteorites When small bodies penetrate the earth's atmosphere, they are known as meteoroids. The luminous process they trigger is called a meteor or shooting star. Most of them burn up at an altitude of around 100 kilometres, while larger ones can also reach the Earth's surface as so-called meteorites and cause impact craters. \\Comets (hair or tail stars) are only a few kilometres in size and consist of a mixture of ice, rocks and dust. When such a 'dirty snowball' approaches the sun from its elongated elliptical orbit, the frozen gas components begin to evaporate and form the comet's tail, which can be millions of kilometres long and is always directed away from the sun. If the Earth crosses such a comet's orbit, the comet particles enter the Earth's atmosphere at high speed and burn up. Its core is made up of rock and ice. It is surrounded by metallic hydrogen due to the enormous pressure (3 million bar). Its atmosphere, which is probably around 1000 kilometres thick, consists of 90% hydrogen and 10% helium. In its ?150°C cold atmosphere, extreme wind speeds of up to 500 km/h prevail, which pull the gases apart to form characteristic coloured bands. The so-called ?Great Red Spot? (?Red Eye?) is such a gigantic whirlwind area in which the Earth would fit twice. Jupiter appears bright enough in the sky to be seen with the naked eye. In 1610, Galileo Galilei discovered its 4 largest moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto) With a diameter of 5,276 kilometres, Ganymede is also the largest moon in the solar system, surpassing the Earth's moon and even the planet Mercury in size. Due to the different orbital periods around the planet, Galileo's moons, which are already visible in binoculars, take up a different position next to Jupiter every evening. \\n \\nJupiter has so far been visited by the space probes Pioneer 10 (1973) and 11 (1974), Voyager 1 and 2 (both 1979), Galileo (1995 to 2003) and Cassini (2000). At the same time, it is the outermost planet that can be easily recognised with the naked eye.\\nDue to its rapid rotation, its equatorial diameter is almost 10% larger than its polar diameter,\\nso that it appears flattened to us in the telescope. Its inner structure is comparable to that of Jupiter (rocky core surrounded by metallic hydrogen). Its atmosphere consists mainly of hydrogen and helium, with traces of methane and ammonia. The\\nsurface temperature is around minus 180°C.\\nSaturn is famous for its complex rings, which consist of countless small chunks of rock and ice orbiting the planet. Although the rings are around 250,000 km across, they are only a few hundred metres thick. As Saturn is inclined by 27 degrees to its orbital plane, from Earth we sometimes look at the rings from 'above' and sometimes from 'below'. The ring system can already be recognised in small telescopes with a magnification of around 30x. To date, 62 moons of Saturn are known, the smallest of which could only be detected with the help of space telescopes. However, the largest satellite - Titan, with a diameter of 5,150 kilometres - was already discovered by Christian Huygens in 1655 and has a dense nitrogen-methane atmosphere. At the beginning of 2005, the European space probe Huygens landed on the surface of this moon. As its axis of rotation is almost parallel to its orbital plane around the sun, the planet 'rolls' along its orbit, so to speak. While its inner structure is similar to that of Jupiter and Saturn (small core of rock and ice, surrounded by a liquid mantle of hydrogen, ammonia and methane), the uppermost layers of the atmosphere contain a noticeable proportion of methane in addition to hydrogen and helium, which gives the planet its blue-greenish appearance in the telescope. Temperatures of around minus 190 °C prevail in the cloud layers. Uranus has a strong magnetic field and a ring system around its equator ? although not nearly as pronounced as on Saturn. Galle and d'Arrest in 1846 due to irregularities in the orbital motion of Uranus. It is the eighth and outermost planet in the solar system and, like Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, is a gaseous planet with a small rocky core. In its bluish atmosphere with temperatures of around minus 210 degrees, there are dark patches as well as light-coloured structures that are interpreted as storms with wind speeds of up to 2,000 km/h. Fine rings have also been detected around Neptune. Of the 13 moons of Neptune known to date, the two largest - Triton and Nereid - have been known for some time. It was discovered on 18 February 1930 by C. Tombaugh. \\On 23 August 2006, Pluto was stripped of its planetary status by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Since then, it is no longer listed as the ninth planet in the solar system, but only as a 'dwarf planet' with the number 134340. The reasons for this were its highly elliptical orbit, its small size and its almost equally large moon Charon, with which it forms a kind of double planetary system. Its thin atmosphere consists mainly of nitrogen and some methane. Temperatures on its surface are around minus 230°C. \\nTo date, no space probe has ever reached this celestial body. The New Horizons space probe, which was launched on 19 January 2006, will explore the dwarf planet from a distance of 10,000 km in July 2015 after a flight duration of 9.5 years.  In 2006, the Jupiter site in Hellmonsödt was enriched with a planet trail. Over a length of around 4.0 km, a barrier-free circular hiking trail was created, where our 8 planets are depicted on display boards at a scale of 1:440 million kilometres and a lot of information about our solar system is included.
The stations are complemented by playgrounds with play equipment and benches with a marvellous view of Hellmonsödt. The start and finish of our "walk through space" is the sun at the children's playground.
There are plenty of parking spaces in the immediate vicinity. Cyclists will find bicycle racks.
Delicacies and culinary delights are offered in the restaurants in Hellmonsödt.
