Chestnuts originate from the sunny south, but there is only one place where they also thrive to maturity north of the Alps: in Unterach. If you don't believe it, read the information boards in the sweet chestnut grove above the village. However, the climate on Lake Attersee was not always this mild. A huge arm of the ice-age Traungletscher glacier once flowed here. The Egelsee, which is strictly protected, was formed as a dead ice hole in the moraine debris after it melted. From the main square in Unterach, walk past the church and cemetery and turn right into the meadow after the kindergarten, walk up a little and across the Unterach bypass road following the signposts to the forest nature trail and sweet chestnut grove. Walk along the nature trail on the right through the forest to a hill. Descend to a small stream and past a house to the main road, which you follow to the left over the bridge. The Attersee-Westwanderweg trail markings then point up to the left. Turn right across a meadow and next to a stream to a farm track that leads up to the Menerweg farm on the left. Above this, hike right across the Kohlbauerwiese meadow to a forest path that leads left into the forest to a lift meadow and the nearby Panoramagasthof Druckerhof (beautiful view of the Höllengebirge mountains). Follow a dirt track over a hill to the Holzberg farm and from there turn left along the gravel road to the Egelsee lake. A wooden footbridge leads to the water on the right, otherwise the shore area may not be entered. From the northern shore, you cross a meadow to a road (car park) and descend to the right to the Hausmann farmstead. Continue downhill on the road until you turn left after a ditch onto hiking trail no. 3. This leads to another fork in the path, from which you descend left to the Urfangbach stream. You descend through the forest ditch to Stockwinkl.
