[Mauthausen](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauthausen "Mauthausen") in the [district of Perg](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bezirk_Perg "Bezirk Perg") and contains a chapel, [monuments](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denkmal_(Gedenken) "Denkmal (Gedenken)") and several thousand graves of foreign, in particular Italian and Serbian [prisoners of war](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsgefangener "Kriegsgefangener") [from](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldat "Soldat") the [First](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erster_Weltkrieg "Erster Weltkrieg") and [Second World](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zweiter_Weltkrieg "Zweiter Weltkrieg") Wars as well as [concentration camp inmates](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/KZ-H%C3%A4ftling "KZ-Häftling"). The site was and still is the venue for Italian-Austrian peace meetings to commemorate the [victims of the war](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsopfer "Kriegsopfer").

The military cemetery was initially built for the prisoners of war who died of [typhus](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleckfieber "Fleckfieber") in the [prisoner of war camp](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsgefangenenlager "Kriegsgefangenenlager") in Reiferdorf near Mauthausen between 1914 and 1918 and were buried there. During a visit to the camp, the [Bishop](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bischof "Bischof") of the [Diocese of Linz](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Di%C3%B6zese_Linz "Diözese Linz"), [Rudolph Hittmair](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolph_Hittmair "Rudolph Hittmair"), was infected and also died of the disease on 5 March 1915.

Following a decision by the [General Commissariat](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalbezirk "Generalbezirk") for [the Care of War Graves](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsgr%C3%A4berf%C3%BCrsorge "Kriegsgräberfürsorge") of the Italian [Ministry of Defence](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verteidigungsministerium "Verteidigungsministerium"), individual graves were laid out in an extensive block at the end of the 1950s. According to a bilingual leaflet published by the Italian Commissariat, 1254 Italian war dead from the Second World War were reburied there from cemeteries and gravesites throughout Austria. At the request of relatives, individual [reburials](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbettung "Umbettung") or [repatriations](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auslandsr%C3%BCckholung "Auslandsrückholung") to [Italy](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italien "Italien") can be organised.

A total of 10,845 soldiers from the First World War and 5,212 war dead from the Second World War are buried at the military cemetery.
