Rebuilt from scratch in 1596, elevated to the status of "Free Nobleman's Seat" by Emperor Ferdinand II in 1621, belonged to Count Adam Herbergsdorff, among others. Designated as an orphanage by Karl Josef von Frey, later "K.K. Trivialschule". The "Sitz am Weyr" is mentioned as early as 1446 as a knight's fief belonging to the Lordship of Ort. In 1596, the Renaissance castle with its arcaded courtyards and the remarkable chapel was largely rebuilt and in 1624, Emperor Ferdinand II elevated it to the status of a "free nobleman's seat". The Cardinal and Prince-Bishop of Passau, Johann Count Lamberg, issued a mass license for the sumptuously furnished church and personally re-consecrated the original Marian and later Benedictine chapel in 1710. In 1738, the property was rededicated by its owner Carl Josef von Frey as an orphanage foundation for 12 boys of salt miners who had suffered accidents and in 1777 it was converted into an Imperial Royal Trivial School. Today, the castle is privately owned and houses one of Europe's most important and beautiful Meissen porcelain collections within its historic walls, with porcelain treasures for Empress Elisabeth, Tsarina Catherine and 20 other royal families - a unique cultural heritage of white gold.
