This was the start of a trade route to Prague, the Prague Road. This gate, built of granite stones and decorated with the Freistadt town coat of arms, has served the people of Freistadt as a defence and fortification since the town was founded. Over the course of time, it has withstood many a fire in the town centre - including the great town fire of 1880, in which it lost its wooden roof, among other things. As much as this fire affected the city, the Vergeiner brothers were spared, as they were in Vienna for study purposes at the time.
