An eventful story from its foundation until its closure came to an end. Countless Salzkammergut residents and guests had travelled with the sooty, steam train and remembered many stories, incidents, accidents and above all the many beautiful, relaxing hours on the train. The first section was opened in 1890. Kaiser Franz Joseph also travelled on the train. Covering a distance of 66.9 kilometres along a fascinating route, the train was not just a means of transport, it was also a tourist asset. Six tunnels and 24 bold bridges underscored the mountainous character of the railway. The train also featured in the film, with the song “Between Salzburg and Bad Ischl”. Unforgettable was also the operetta “Der feurige Elias“(The Fiery Elias) by Rudi Gfaller which commemorated the train and its premier on 27th July 1963 took place in Bad Ischl. On 17th November 2017 the Salzkammergut Local Train was moved from its home at the former Gasthaus Jupiter to its new home at Bad Ischl Station.
