In 1994 the large Upper Austrian national exhibition “die Donau” about the Danube took place here, which was visited by nearly 300,000 people. From the „Nibelungenstraße“ approx. 120 m upstream of the Danube you reach the „Donauplatz“ – also a setting of the Danube world of Engelhartszell “Engelhartszeller Donauwelt”! In 1994 the Upper Austrian national exhibition “die Donau” took place there. Especially an eye catcher is the gigantic horizontal turbine of the Jochenstein Run-of-River power plant. This turbine can be crossed on a bridge. Sourrounding panels inform you about the past national exhibition, the Jochenstein Run-of-River plant and the Danube shipping company Wurm+Noé, formerly known as Wurm+Köck. On the way downstream the Danube you notice more higher and lower power plant facilities. The difference consist in the installation technique of the turbines! Here an panel about the Jochenstein Run-of-River Plant demonstrates vividly the functioning of a turbine with a vertical shaft by using a schematic drawing. In younger power plants along the Danube only turbines with horizontal shafts were used since 1974. More information about this is available at the power plant Ottensheim-Wilhering. Next to the „Donauplatz“ lies the Danube ship “Donau-Schiff”. Inside of the ship the first swimming national exhibition was held. Today it functions as a pier for the Danube shipping company Wurm+Noé and informs guests about the Danube as a waterway. At the entrance to the “Donauplatz” in the blue long building is the Danube atelier “Donau-Atelier” located. There local artists portray their arts (not always open). Recommendation: A short detour lets you stroll along the traces of the national exhibition!
