Traditional cultural landscape The Sauwald is a traditional cultural landscape consisting of a mosaic of forests and agricultural land. The many individual farmsteads and hamlets emphasise the rural impression and create a harmonious landscape. The subsoil of the Sauwald is formed by granites and gneisses and belongs to the crystalline rocks of the Bohemian Massif. Farm grassland and arable land make up the main agricultural areas, with forestry dominating in the densely wooded Hochsauwald. Here, however, the proportion of non-local spruce forests is high.
