A survey and archaeological findings of clay fragments and iron nails have shown the existence of a 2000m² castle complex. The owner and name of the castle are unknown.

The archaeologist of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum, Dr. Christine Schwanzar, claims that there is "a classical textbook castle complex, a so-called “Hangspornanlage”. It is not mentioned in documents. There are no remaining walls, just a 30m deep fountain, which would have been elaborate for these times. The time and effort taken to build the moat and the fountain is extraordinary, as castles of this size normally only contained cisterns.
However, the Devil’s Tower is mentioned in a book of legends about Steyr with a detailed description of the "robber knight’s castle" in Waldneukirchen and near Pillwein.

The large hole was dug out by the devil himself, hence the name "devil’s hole" (Teufelslucka). A treasure seeker dug 30m, and found merely clay fragments which presumably originate from the end of the 14th century when the castle burnt down, as these fragments have been “fired twice”. A similar situation happened at Leonstein Castle, as the owner had not paid his taxes to the regional princes and so the castle was destroyed.
