Hohenbrunn Castle is the only documented castle designed by the great Baroque architect Jakob Prandtauer. Built between 1722 and 1732 on behalf of the then provost Johann Baptist Födermayr of St. Florian, the castle is considered the Baroque idealization of the Upper Austrian square farmstead typical of the region between the Traun and Enns rivers. The Hunting Museum serves to preserve hunting traditions and promote an understanding of the art of the hunt. The development of hunting is illustrated through historical and art-historical objects such as weapons, their accessories, and images spanning four centuries. Other highlights of the museum’s collection include hunting porcelain, rare weapons, and Baron von Bistram’s collection of hunting dog collars, which features a wide variety of dog collars (Halsungen) dating from 1580 to 1804. Among the Baroque paintings on display in the castle, “The Bear Hunt” by Franz Snyders of Antwerp (1579–1657), a specialist in animal painting, stands out.
