The Bayeux engraving

Haslach an der Mühl, Oberösterreich, Österreich

Workshop with Tanja Boukal

The term "Bayeux stitch" describes the overlay and overcasting technique that was used throughout Europe in the Middle Ages;

This special embroidery style is easy to execute and is suitable for making tapestries and large embroideries. It originates from the Norman and English tradition and is very economical in terms of the threads used, as it is executed with only a few threads on the back of the fabric. The famous Bayeux Tapestry was made using this technique as early as the 11th century.
In the course, we will explore all aspects of this technique. As long, floating embroidery threads are used here, it is very important to stretch the fabric tightly on an embroidery hoop in order to achieve a good result. A contour stitch is embroidered for the drawings and letters. These motifs are "coloured" with lay and satin stitch. As with the original embroidery, which was embroidered with only 7 dominant colours of wool thread on linen, the same threads and colours will be used during the course to explore the possibilities and limits of this ancient technique.
