Explore the original locations of well-known film productions and be charmed by the region’s distinctive attractions. Upper Austria is a unique setting – and perhaps that’s why it has been chosen as the home of world-famous screen hits such as the Austrian TV series Schlosshotel Orth and films The White Horse Inn and The Sound of Music.
Where Eagles Dare
Upper Austria featured as the backdrop for a Hollywood production back in the 1960s, with the Feuerkogel cable car appearing in Where Eagles Dare with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.
The mother of all television series filmed in Upper Austria remains Schlosshotel Orth: the luxury hotel in Gmunden am Traunsee opened its doors for 144 episodes between 1996 and 2004. The hotel managers were played by Klaus Wildbolz and Albert Fortell.
The film portrays the moving story of the singing von Trapp family and was filmed in Mondsee, among other locations. The songs from The Sound of Music are known all around the world.
The film shot in 1960 and starring Peter Alexander, Waltraud Haas and Gunther Philipp is arguably the most famous of the story’s three cinematic incarnations. The outdoor shoots took place in the summer of 1960 at original locations in St Wolfgang, and the indoor scenes were filmed in the autumn in Bad Ischl.
The Wall, a drama from 2012, belongs to the genre of literary film adaptations. The setting for the original novel by Upper Austrian author Marlen Haushofer was inspired by the landscape of the Kalkalpen National Park. The film, starring Martina Gedeck, was shot in the area surrounding Bad Goisern in the Salzkammergut region.
