# The most beautiful summit hikes

The 6 most beautiful summit hikes
=================================

These peaks in Upper Austria offer breathtaking views. Climb up and enjoy the view!

Schafberg (1.783 m), Lake Wolfgangsee
-------------------------------------

The Schafberg is one of the most striking mountains in Upper Austria. Hikes to the summit can be perfectly combined with the nostalgic [Schafbergbahn](https://www.upperaustria.com/en/oesterreich-poi/detail/400929/schafbergbahn-railway-wolfgangseeschifffahrt-ferry-service.html) - the steepest steam cog railway in Austria. There are a wide variety of starting points and thus variants for a hike up the Schafberg. We present three lakes as starting points:

- From Winkl/Tiefgraben on Lake Mondsee in 5 - 6 hours on hiking trail no. 20, then the last section with the Schafberg cable car to the top.

[**Details of the hike from Mondsee to the Schafberg**](https://www.upperaustria.com/en/activities/hiking/all-hiking-trails-in-upper-austria/oesterreich-tour/detail/100087/from-winkl-to-mount-schafberg-sheepmountain.html)
- From St. Wolfgang via the Auerriesenweg and the Purtschellersteig to the summit in around 4 hours.

[**Details of the hike from Lake Wolfgangsee to the Schafberg**](https://www.upperaustria.com/en/activities/hiking/all-hiking-trails-in-upper-austria/oesterreich-tour/detail/100137/schafberg-sheep-mountain-purtschellersteig.html)
- From Unterach am Attersee on partly alpine stages in around 6 hours via the Eisenau-Alm, the Suissensee and the Himmelspforte to the summit.

[**Details of the hike from Attersee to the Schafberg**](https://www.upperaustria.com/en/activities/hiking/all-hiking-trails-in-upper-austria/oesterreich-tour/detail/100089/kreuzstein-eisenau-alp-schafberg.html)

From the top of the Schafberg you have a marvellous view of 7 lakes, the Watzmann, the Untersberg, the Tennengebirge, the Schladminger Tauern, the Hohe Dachstein, the Höllengebirge and the Totes Gebirge. The Hotel Schafbergspitze or the Himmelspforte mountain hut, where you can enjoy delicious mountain hut specialities and home-made pastries, invite you to stop for refreshments on the Schafberg.

Schoberstein (1.037 m), Weißenbach am Attersee
----------------------------------------------

- Kilometre: 4 km
- Duration: 2.5 hours
- Elevation gain: 565 m
- Refreshment stops: Hotel Post, Gasthaus-Pension zur Nixe

The short mountain tour to the Schoberstein is moderately difficult and is one of the most beautiful around Lake Attersee. From Weißenbach am Attersee, it takes around 1.5 hours over numerous steep hairpin bends to reach the rocky summit of the Schoberstein. From the top, you have a marvellous view of Lake Attersee, Lake Mondsee, the Schafberg and towards Hausruck. A descent option is the tour to the Dachsteinblick and via the Brennerriese down to the forestry office. From Dachsteinblick, it is also worth taking a detour over a ridge to the summit of the Brennerin. On the descent, you can either hike via the Hochleckenhaus to the Kienklause or via the Brennerriese back to Weißenbach. Tip: When you get back down, it's worth making a detour to the [Nixenfall](https://www.upperaustria.com/en/oesterreich-tour/detail/100034/nixenfall-waterfall.html) waterfall.

- Kilometres: 9 km
- Duration: 8 hours
- Elevation gain: 1,900 m
- Refreshments and overnight accommodation: Priel shelter

The Großer Priel is one of the highest peaks in the Totes Gebirge. The mountain tour is high alpine through rocky terrain and includes a few easy climbing sections.
