The Race Around Austria always takes place around the 15th of August. (2019: 12th to 18th of August) The start and finish lines of this ultra race event are in St. Georgen im Attergau. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Lake Attersee and the Höllengebirge mountains, the athletes line up to start in different races.
Cycle 2,200 kilometers (including 30,000 meters of climbing) NONSTOP once around Austria on streets that run along or near the border - either alone or as part of a team.
“St. Georgen im Attergau has become a home away from home for ultra cyclists. Thousands of people line the square in front of the starting stage at the start and finish line. But above all, the region is 100% behind the race. Nearly a quarter of race participants come from the surrounding area, which is already impressive for such a long and difficult race,” explains race director Michael Nussbaumer. Also set is the Attergau Marktfest, which provides the framework for one of the cycling world’s most emotional finishes.
Small cosmetic changes to the route are being made at Passau and Halbenrain, in both cases to the athletes’ advantage. For example, there will be better paved roads in Passau, and cyclists can now cycle right up to the stop in Halbenrain. New to the programme since 2016 is the Business CHALLENGE. Athletic entrepreneurs and employees can race around the 550-kilometre circuit of Upper Austria. “For years now, we have been seeing our sponsors again and again amongst our crowd of participants, looking to experience the adventure and the challenge of Race Around Austria for themselves.
In 2019, the Race Across America qualifying race will celebrate its eleventh anniversary and, for the first time in Upper Austria, the Austrian ultra cycling champions (solo, two-man teams and four-man teams) will be selected and crowned up on the Race Around Austria stage.
