The Heilbronner Circular Trail is a very family-friendly, well-developed karst trail that leads past the Dachstein Shark and the Heilbronner Cross.

The family-friendly circular trail at over 2000 m altitude

From Obertraun (510 m) take the Dachstein Krippeinstein cable car to conquer 1,600 metres in altitude. At Krippenstein (2,100 m) you can overlook the incredibly wide Dachstein plateau.

From the mountain station of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car, the well-maintained path leads over hilly terrain, which is densely overgrown with dwarf pines.

After a 45-minute walk you will reach the Dachstein Shark, the newest attraction on the Heilbronner Circular Trail.  It is especially popular among the smaller hikers, because you can climb into the shark and admire the beautiful landscape through its mouth. The Dachstein Shark therefore quickly became a popular photo point.

After a further 45 minutes the circular trail takes you to the Heilbronner Cross. This cross reminds you of the Dachstein tragedy at Easter 1954, when 10 students and 3 teachers from Heilbronn died during a weatherstorm when hiking in the Dachstein massif.

Continue in a western direction - past the Hirzkarsee - to Krippeneck to the Gjaid station of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car (another 1.5 hours). Take a further 15-minute walk to refresh yourself on the sunny terrace of the Gjaid Alm. Afterwards you will return to the valley with all three sections of the cable car over the Dachstein Krippenstein!

Our tip: Make a stopover at the Dachstein Krippenstein. Take another 2 hours and visit the 5Fingers viewing plattform and the World Heritage Spiral. You can enjoy magnificent views of the karst formation.

Reward yourself afterwards with a small break in the Lodge at Krippenstein or in the Mountain Restaurant Dachstein Krippenstein.
