A summer of operetta – Lehár Festival in Bad Ischl
Europe’s largest operetta festival

Bad Ischl, a former retreat of Austro-Hungarian royalty, is where Franz Lehár wrote his timeless works – and the light gaiety of operetta lives on in this charming town to this day. High-quality, lively operettas have been performed here at the famous festival for over fifty years. As the largest and oldest operetta festival in Europe, the Lehár Festival Bad Ischl has a rich history. Every year, it treats its guests to performances of operettas by an array of different composers in the magnificent Kongress and TheaterHaus, located at the heart of the spa gardens.

Brief description of the 2023 programme:
MADAME POMPADOUR by Leo Fall
Madame Pompadour is an operetta in three acts by Leo Fall (1873–1925) with a libretto written by Rudolf Schanzer and Ernst Welisch. Leo Fall’s energetic, catchy melodies alternate with tender, sentimental musical numbers. The work premiered in Berlin on 9 September 1922 with Fritzi Massary in the leading role as Madame Pompadour.
DER VOGELHÄNDLER by Carl Zeller
With Der Vögelhändler (The Bird Seller), first performed in 1891 in Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, Carl Zeller (1842–1898) and his librettists created one of the most successful operettas of its time, indeed of the genre as a whole. No doubt one of the reasons for the popularity of this well-constructed musical comedy of errors is the fact that its ingredients are perfectly balanced for theatrical effect: an abundance of idyllic rural ambience, ample folksiness, a strong pinch of eroticism, a good portion of emotion and plenty of catchy melodies, including “Ich bin die Christel von der Post” and, of course, “Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol”.
