The Linzertor is located in the southernmost part of Freistadt's old town centre.
The listed Linzertor is a medieval town gate in Freistadt, Upper Austria. The name comes from the next largest town to the south - Linz.
At 28 metres high, the Linzertor is one of the mightiest gate towers in Central Europe and is considered the city's landmark. The two long slits were used to sink the swing beams of the drawbridge. Next to the Habsburg double-headed eagle with the
Babenberg shield - which is also the town's coat of arms - our town's patron saint, St Catherine, is also depicted. At that time, Freistadt was one of the seven provincial cities in Upper Austria, which were Linz, Wels, Enns, Steyr, Gmunden, Vöcklabruck and Freistadt. The Linz gate was locked in the evening, the large key taken to the mayor and only unlocked again at dawn. The embrasures in the house facades can be clearly recognised on the right. The small porch, reminiscent of a birdhouse, could have been a pitch nose. From the bridge, you have a good view of the deepest point of the moat and the Dechanthof Tower with the small holes in the masonry in which the scaffolding poles were anchored during construction and later removed again.
later removed again. In the town wall to the west of the gate, round stones can be recognised alongside the square ones. These are stone cannonballs, which no longer had any function at this time and were used to plug the holes in the dilapidated wall. Outside the mantle wall, which is the highest here, you can see the brewery. The brewery also had something to celebrate in 2020: the 250th anniversary of the
brewing commune in Freistadt. This form of society is unique in the whole of Europe.
